The femtosecond laser is a surgical laser used in high precision ocular microsurgery. As the femtosecond laser emits pulses of extremely short duration (10-15 sec), ocular tissue can be cut with ultimate precision, allowing cataract surgery to be performed with utmost accuracy. Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is known as "bladeless" cataract surgery, as the laser instead of the conventional blade is used to create the incision to enter the eye.
The femtosecond laser cuts a perfectly-centered circular shaped opening in the cataractous lens capsule which allows for subsequent more accurate centration and placement of the replacement artificial intraocular lens. As the laser also pre-divides the cataract into smaller pieces, less ultrasound energy is required to subsequently remove the cataract compared to the conventional "phacoemulsification" cataract removal method. This reduces the risk of complications as less ultrasound energy is used and less heat produced.
